A worthy cause?
Bradley and the House Captain, Adam Brownell, have decided unanimously that Hake House should, as a single entity, commit to a charity and make a regular donation. This requires each member of the house to contribute $1 every month, to sponsor a child of the Watoto Children's Orphanage in Uganda, which has a good relationship with King's.
I figured that although it may be a worthy cause, it may be another attempt of the school to "rip us off". We're only supporting one child for about $50 a month, I'm sure Anglicare and Oxfam do it for a lot less. On top of this, Bradley's considering sending a "hamper" (note the irony in that to hamper something is to delay or obstruct it) containing personal gifts that we have chosen. I might contribute a Sim card, or a spoon, just to prove a point. Or maybe I will be nice and contribute some money, so that the Ugandan postman can choose a gift for himself?
This was announced in house meeting today; I was going to suggest publically that the money perhaps go to a more immediate problem, that Bradley should perhaps invest it in a decent fire alarm system, or a reliable wireless network, or an anger management course or some good parenting books, but for my sake I did not say so.
